Malawa Gibbs, MC, (they/them) graduated from Arizona State University (ASU) in May 2025 with a Masters in Counseling Psychology. They completed their BA in Psychology with a minor in Japanese at San Jose State University (SJSU) as a McNair Scholar. During their graduate career, they explored research areas that demonstrated the way minority stress can affect the mental health of intersectional identities in trans and nonbinary (TNB) people of color. Malawa has provided individual and group counseling to adults with familial concerns, bereavement, adjustment, depression, and anxiety. Additionally, they have experience providing group therapy to adolescents and teens with behavioral concerns related to impulse control, emotional regulation, and building meaningful interpersonal connections. They are open to treating those coming in with other concerns, such as gender/sexuality exploration, coming out, identity cohesion (for LGBTQ+ populations with multiple marginalized identities), or navigating consensual non-monogamy. With a commitment to providing culturally sensitive therapy to LGBTQ+ POC, they integrate multicultural, liberation, and CBT-based approaches to their therapeutic style and allow their clients to express their identities authentically in the space. Malawa is passionate about social justice and is committed to representing and empowering marginalized identities; providing accessible education and services; and strengthening solidarity in LGBTQ+ POC spaces. They aspire to advance their graduate career by pursuing a PhD and expanding on intersectional LGBTQ+ research.
In their free time, they enjoy crocheting, free-writing stories, hiking, studying arthropods, and language learning.
