Although lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex and asexual (2SLGBTQIA+) individuals share some universal issues, their particular concerns are unique. Many 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals feel more comfortable with a therapist who is both familiar with these issues and accepting, supportive and encouraging during treatment.
SOGIA therapists provide sexual orientation and gender affirming sex positive counseling. We share in the belief that there is nothing inherently wrong with your sexual orientation, consensual sexual needs/desires (i.e., Kink community), or gender expression/identity. We provide a safe environment for all 2SLGBTQIA+ clients and are prepared to address the complexities facing this community.
SOGIA therapists have extensive experience and training working with the community. During 2SLGBTQIA+ counseling, some of the challenges that we tend to focus on include:
•Relationships and Dating
•Coming Out
•Self-Esteem
•Living with HIV/AIDS
•Sexual Compulsion
•Sexual/Gender Identity
•Substance Use/Addictions
•Sexuality
•Intimacy Issues
•Dealing with Shame
•Internalized Homophobia
•Internalized Transphobia
•Suicidal Thoughts/Self Harm
For some individuals, sexual practices, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity/expression may be partly related to their emotional stress (e.g., depression, anxiety) and problem behaviors (e.g., substance use). We will be sure to explore these potential relationships while also understanding the unresolved core issues associated with this relationship. Other people may wish to focus on other issues such as trauma or mood issues that are unrelated to their sexual orientation and/or gender, and they want to work with therapists who are understanding and who take a nonjudgmental stance. Either way, we will work jointly with you to focus on your specific needs, life problems, and therapeutic goals.
